The average casual golfer doesn’t give much thought to picking the right golf ball. They think of the ball as part of the game that really isn’t all that important. After all, you’re just wacking it around the course, right? Wrong! Using the right golf ball will gain distance to your off the tee shots, make it easier to pull off finesse shots, & so much more!

Basically, there are 3 types of balls: balata, 2-piece, or a combination of both. Golf balls are manufactured with three performance qualities in mind as well: spin, distance, and control. Choosing the appropriate ball really depends on what you are looking for in your golf game.

Are you a lower handicap player looking for great spin and control? If so, pick a balata type ball. This is simply a softer ball with a softer cover allowing for more spin. This is the ball that most professionals choose. These are also costlier than other balls.

Perhaps you have a higher handicap and are looking more for a ball with distance and durability. This is where a good 2-piece ball will be more appropriate. This golf ball has a harder cover which creates less back-spin allowing you to hit it further.

Some golf balls are created with a slower swing in mind. They will have a light-weight construction that catches air. They are generally marketed for women or seniors, but plenty of men also play this type because it gains them extra distance.

Believe it or not the weather you are playing in can make a difference in your golf ball choice. Course conditions can also dictate which golf ball you use. Maybe the course has been deluged with rain. In that case, you’ll need a ball which travels futher and produces less spin. If you are playing on a rockhard, sun-baked surface, choose something softer that will land soft and spin.

Look at the temperature as well. Balls come in two compressions – 90 @ 100. When you strike the ball, it compresses. Therefore the 90 compression golfball will be softer than the 100. If it’s cold, the ball will not naturallt compress as much so you might want to play a 90 compression. If it’s a hot day, you might opt for the 100 compression.

In general, two piece balls are going to give you more distance and they will be more durable meaning they will last longer. Solid core golf balls offer less trajectory and can spin for better accuracy. Even the dimples on the ball can have an effect on your game. Smaller dimples decrease trajectory with larger dimples increasing it.

Choosing the right golf ball really is important to playing a good game. There are many, many different balls to choose from on the market. Explore which golf ball you may want to use and then try it out. Experiment and in time, you’ll find exactly the right golf ball for you.
